On Monday, November 17, the New Jersey Assembly is scheduled to vote on A2116, legislation banning most firearms over .50 caliber.
Here are a few easy steps to making sure this does not pass the assembly:
1) Find out which NJ Legislative District you live in: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/municipalities.asp
2) Once you know your district, Note some of the other districts in your area: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/njmap210.html
3) Get the contact information of the representatives you want to contact: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/districtnumbers.asp
4) Write and call the representatives about bill A2116. There are a couple points you will want to convey:
a) Be clear that you oppose A2116, and that you want the representative to oppose it as well.
b) Give a sentence or two explaining your reason for opposition.
c) Make it clear that you will do more than just vote for opponents of A2116 or vote against supporters of A2116, but that you will actively work to get supporters of A2116 out of office in the November 2009 elections. And make it clear that you are willing to work outside your district.
d) Thank the representatives for their time and service.
Here is an example email:
Subject: Please Oppose A2116
Dear Assemblyman/Assemblywoman,
I wanted to contact you today to voice my opposition to bill A2116, which Revises definition of destructive device to include weapons of 50 caliber or greater. This bill makes the critical mistake of punishing possession of inanimate objects rather than addressing criminal behavior. It also bans a wide variety of sporting and historical arms, including arms used during the Revolutionary War.
The elected officials who oppose A2116 will get more than my vote, they will get my support regardless of whether I live in their district. I am willing to gather my friends and acquaintances to work in the upcoming 2009 assembly elections. We will make sure candidates who respect our rights win the next election, and opposition to A2116 will be a deciding factor in who we support.
Thank you for your time and your dedication to making New Jersey a better place.
