Mission

New Jersey needs sensible gun laws. In spite of the claims by politicians, the current batch of gun laws do NOT keep guns out of "the wrong hands". They keep guns out of the right hands. They put massive obstacles in the way of law abiding citizen's attempts to purchase the tools needed to defends their lives, their homes, and their families. The tangle of legislation and bureaucratic 'administrative codes' results in confusing and ever changing rules that are nearly impossible for the average citizen to understand. An obscure rule change can turn a law abiding citizen into a criminal overnight and with out warning.

Here are some of the changes the New Jersey Citizens Defense League wants to see in New Jersey firearms law:

  • BB guns, airsoft guns, and sling shots should NOT be classified as firearms. Citizens who possess these items could face a year and a half in prison
  • Any citizen who can qualify to own a firearm should be allowed to carry it.
  • Needing to go through the fingerprinting and background check process EACH and EVERY time a citizen wishes to purchase a pistol deters citizens from purchasing pistols for self defense. A simple NICS check should suffice once a citizen obtains an FID.
  • New Jersey requires special licenses for certain firearms based on certain names and cosmetic features. The rules about which firearms require these licenses are vague and unclear. Accidentally possessing a firearm with these cosmetic features can get you up to 5 years in jail. Vague rules relating to cosmetic features MUST BE REPEALED
  • The New Jersey State Police maintains an 'interpretation' of the assault weapons ban that is wildly outside of the statutory regulations. Anyone who actually read the law would still have no idea what is legal and what can get him 5 years in jail. The administrative code MUST be changed to bring it back in line with the statutes.
  • Citizens in New Jersey should be allowed to defend themselves from bodily harm inside and outside their homes. They should be allowed to do so with out facing criminal or civil penalties.

The New Jersey Citizens Defense League wants to enact Sensible gun laws that do not keep citizens guessing, and do not restrict their right to self defense.

How will the NJCDL achieve it's goals?

At the NJCDL, we do not want to change minds. We want to change laws.

New Jersey has 120 state lawmakers. Hundreds of dedicated gun owners making phone calls or writing letters to politicians, campaigning for (or against) them, and perhaps running against them if necessary. Gun owners are not inherently political people, so we teach the techniques that work to other gun owners.

"It does not take a majority to prevail…but rather an irate, tireless minority, who keep on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." -Samuel Adams
